Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin pieces of porcelain that lay directly on the front surface of your natural teeth. These thin pieces are bonded over the existing tooth and are a viable option to a traditional dental crown.

If you are wanting to improve the aesthetic appearance of a tooth or teeth due to the shade, spacing, and even size of your teeth then you are an ideal candidate for porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are an ideal solution to correct any cosmetic issue ranging from discoloration, broken or chipped teeth, tooth spacing, and mild crowding.

Even though dental cleanings and teeth whitening both work wonders for keeping your teeth healthy and beautiful, sometimes there are aspects of your teeth that cannot be changed as easily. If you wish to improve your smile, you will want to schedule an evaluation with Cherrydale Family Dental to ask about porcelain veneers.

The entire team at Cherrydale Family Dental is thoughtful in working with every member of the family, from infant to teenager to mom and dad to grandparents. We enjoy watching every patient grow and mature, remaining a Cherrydale patient. If you have any questions at all regarding porcelain veneers, simply call Cherrydale Family Dental at 703-243-8288. You can find us at 4399 Old Dominion Drive, Arlington, VA, 22312.

WITH CHERRYDALE DENTAL TODAY

Begin with a Consultation

To ensure that porcelain veneers are even a solution for you, you will want to start by making an evaluation appointment with us. Discussing your treatment goals at this appointment will us help determine if porcelain veneers are an appropriate treatment. We will also review veneer types and color shades available based on your budget and desired outcome.

Porcelain Veneer Preparation

In this initial preparation appointment, we will start by creating the necessary room for the veneers to be placed over your existing teeth. In doing this, we will remove a razor thin layer of the tooth enamel. This procedure is usually totally painless, but we may offer to you the option for anesthesia if you are feeling uncomfortable or anxious.

Next, we will make an impression of your teeth to use in helping to create the new shape you are looking for with your new veneers. We will also choose the appropriate shade of porcelain to match the current color of your surrounding teeth or your selected color if you are looking to correct multiple teeth discoloration. Your veneers will then be fabricated at a dental lab before they are ready for final bonding.

The Final Placement of the Porcelain Veneers

The last appointment is a fun one! Your porcelain veneers will be ready for placement, and you will leave Cherrydale Family Dental with your new stunning smile. First, we will confirm the veneers match the color and shape desired. We will trim or change the color slightly before the bonding begins if they need slight modification.

After the veneers meet your approval, we will need to prepare your teeth by conducting a general cleaning, polishing, and then etching of the teeth. Etching is the process of roughening up the surface by using an abrasive dental liquid for the veneers to adhere to the teeth.

Once the teeth are ready, a bonding cement will be placed on the front surface and the veneers are placing over the teeth. If the cement needs assistance in drying quickly and properly, a light will be used to quicken the curing process. When the cement has cured, you are both free to leave and share your new smile.

Possible Side Effects and Aftercare

You may experience some tooth sensitivity after your veneers are placed when coming in contact with hot or cold foods or drinks. This side effect will diminish in a few weeks, but make sure to check in with us if the sensation lasts longer or continues.

After finally achieving this new smile you have been waiting for, you will want to make sure you are taking the time to properly maintain your porcelain veneers to ensure a long-lasting result. If you grind your teeth you should always wear a mouth guard while sleeping. Veneers, just like natural teeth, do not do well when clenched and twisted simultaneously, and can result in cracking or fracturing. You will be encouraged to avoid hard foods such as dense nuts or ice that can cause unnecessary stress on your veneers.

Types of Veneers Available

  • Porcelain

This is the most popular of the veneer types because the porcelain is a durable and long-lasting option. The ceramic layers are typically comprised of dentin and enamel to portray a natural look and excellent fit. There will be some reduction in the natural teeth size with this method which may not be the best option for your restoration goals.

  • Prepless

This type of veneer requires no reduction in size to the natural teeth before the placement. Prepless veneer shells are very thin porcelain pieces that lay over the existing teeth just like traditional porcelain veneers. If you are looking to correct several dental issues this may not be the appropriate treatment for

  • Minimal Prep

As the name suggests, minimal prep veneers can be placed with extraordinarily little preparation to the teeth before bonding. An exceedingly small amount of the enamel must be removed before the veneers are placed, giving you the option of keeping your natural tooth structure in comparison to traditional porcelain veneers.

  • Composite

If you are looking for a more affordable veneer restoration, composite veneers can be a reasonable option. There can be very little to zero preparation needed for the teeth before placing this restoration. Composite veneers can be just as effective in correcting your dental concerns. However, they will not last as long as porcelain, requiring replacement in five to ten years.
