Dental Cleaning

Dental cleaning is the primary elements for preventative dentistry. The best way to avoid dental problems such as cavities, dental pain, gum disease, and other dental emergencies is to just prevent them altogether. If you establish the good habit of practicing a disciplined, at-home oral hygiene routine, and schedule check-ups and dental cleaning with the staff at Cherrydale you will have the recipe for an unbeatable combination in prevention.

The team at Cherrydale Family Dental is proud of our efforts in working with every member of the family, from infant to teenager to mom and dad to grandparents. Patience is certainly a virtue in our fast-paced lives today. We enjoy watching a patient grow and mature with a healthy smile. If you have any questions at all regarding dental cleaning, simply call Cherrydale Family Dental at 703-243-8288. You can find us at 4399 Old Dominion Drive, Arlington, VA, 22312.

What are Regular Dental Cleanings?

Regular dental cleanings are usually conducted with a comprehensive oral examination or a scheduled, regular evaluation.  Once your initial diagnostic exam has been completed, our dentist or a staff hygienist will continue with a regular cleaning, or prophylaxis.  If we find that you have gum disease, we will recommend a deep cleaning of your teeth first to treat the infected soft tissue and then allow your mouth to heal before we finished our dental cleaning.

During the first stage of your regular dental cleaning, our hygienist will use an ultrasonic scaler or a specific dental hand scaler to remove all debris, calculus, and plaque from your enamel, between your teeth and then around your gum line.

When this portion of the cleaning is done, the hygienist will follow up with a polishing procedure that uses a special paste, polishing each and every tooth. Finally, they will aggressively floss your teeth, and they will make recommendations or suggestions about proper flossing technique for you to continue at home.

That simple, harmless, and pain-free procedure is all there is to it. Once your dental cleaning is completed, one of our staff members may follow up with you regarding any additional treatment our dentist may have recommended and then make any follow up appointments if necessary.

Cleanings for Adults

The health industry strongly recommends that all adults receive teeth cleanings at least twice a year. Good oral health is essential no matter the age. As we grow older, our risk for an oral infection continues to increase. The older our teeth get, the more that hard, protective enamel begins to wear away, and it will become even easier to get a cavity. The best way to prevent this is by brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. You should continue to schedule your six-month visits with Cherrydale Family Dental. We love working with families and offer flexible appointment times so that you are able to schedule around both work and family commitments, making it easier to maintain good oral health.

Cleanings for Children

At Cherrydale Family Dental, we recommend that parents bring their children in for oral exams and cleanings beginning at 12 months of age, and then every 6 months after that.  Introducing your child early and regularly to a dental visit is an important way to establish your child’s confidence, trust, and comfort during future dental visits and it will create a positive and friendly relationship with our staff.

Continuing Education for your At Home Oral Hygiene

During your examination and teeth cleaning, we will also suggest ways that you can keep your teeth and gums healthy at home. At Cherrydale Family Dental, we believe that good oral hygiene at home is equally as important to do in conjunction with visiting us. We will recommend that you use a soft toothbrush, brush your teeth twice a day, two minutes each time, and to also use a fluoride toothpaste. This effort will remove damaging sugars and bacteria from your teeth every day and the fluoride will help to strengthen them. You will also benefit from the daily flossing to remove the food particles and bacteria from between the teeth where your brushing can not reach. You can even follow up with an antibacterial mouthwash to help to kill any remaining germs.

Your diet is not only important to your overall health, but also your oral health. Try to drink as much water a day as possible and consider eating a balanced diet that contains dairy products, lean protein, green vegetables, and complex carbs so that your body gets the healthy nutrients it needs for you to remain healthy. We will provide additional tips and information during your examinations and your dental cleanings.
